Garden Production Workshop |
As a result of this conversation, Sr. Challco developed a plan for a local Sustainable Medicinal and Artesian Garden Project for the Protection and Teaching of Medicinal Plant Values and Uses. Local resident Alberto Manequeriapi of Huachipaeri and Machigenga Tribal descent was named Promotor/Supervisor of the project.
The
project was initially funded by the Tropical Rainforest Coalition. Please
visit their site for more information on the beginning of this project.
The overall objective of the program was to re-introduce to the local families the uses and values of medicinal plants for the improvement of health of the population.
In addition, a local native crafts center was been constructed in the manner of the original tribal community buildings by Pro-Naturaleza. Here, the same locals learned the traditional weaving of baskets and purses and offering them for sale to tourists.
The money earned conserves the forest perimeter of Manu by providing families with incomes which serves as an alternative to clear-cutting of trees. Under the sponsorship of Living Bridges Foundation, the program will expand to involve more families each year while offering short-term workshops and training to locals in the use of traditional farming and growing methods.
